Newhouse in NYC Meets: Callie Schweitzer at TIME

This semester, students in the Social Platforms, Processes and Perspectives class will have the opportunity to learn from some of the biggest names in the business. Students will hear from people who work at various social platforms and companies to learn how to effectively grow a brand’s reach and better engage followers.

For our first social media “field trip,” we headed to the Time and Life building to hear from Callie Schweitzer (@cschweitz), Director of Digital Innovation at TIME. But first, the students took a quick detour to the InStyle office for a visit with Newhouse alumna Sharon Clott Kanter (@sharonclott), senior editor at InStyle. She gave the students a fabulous tour and a peek into the fashion closet (it’s just as cool as you’d expect). She’s heading to Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival, so we’re happy we caught her before she left!

Then the students headed to the 22nd floor to meet with Callie, who in just one year has doubled TIME‘s traffic. Lucky for us, she shared some of her best social media secrets and traffic wisdom. She also gave phenomenal tips to the students on how they can best relay social media wins to their internship supervisors. Newhouse in NYC student Leah Greene live-tweeted the talk, and some of our favorite social and career advice sound bites are below:

Thanks to Callie for taking the time to meet with us. The students were very lucky to hear from you!

P.S. Sign up for The Brief, TIME’s daily newsletter. All of the students signed up and gave feedback to Callie, and they’re hooked. It tells you the top 12 stories you need to read to be in-the-know. You can thank us later!
