Newhouse in NYC Meets: Angela Zucconi at VICE
On Thursday September 4th, Danyel Smith’s Race, Gender and Media class met at the “eclectic” Kinfolk café in Brooklyn right before crossing the street to the offices of VICE Media. For a few of the Newhouse NYC students, it was their first time in Brooklyn.
Hosted by Angela Zucconi, VICE Media’s Director of Finance, Newhouse students experienced a vibrant and interactive presentation about the ascendant company, and Zucconi mentioned what Danyel and the students already knew: that VICE had raised 500 million (from A&E and TCV) in just the previous week. VICE COO Richard Waterlow also stopped by to say hello.
After a whirlwind tour of the VICE offices, the class had many questions for Angela Zucconi as she talked about her life as a college student, and about the expectations of her Italian-American, Catholic family and community as she targeted mathematics as an undergraduate, and then graduate school (business). Over the course of her career she’s often been the only, or one-of-two women in leadership groups, and she emphasized the importance of being prepared, and being passionate. Angela chose media over the “CPA route,” because she loves culture.
Zucconi also provided the Newhouse students with VICE coffee mugs, music, magazines, and insight into today’s constantly evolving media landscape. She was truly the host with the most!
