Newhouse in NYC Meets: Dodai Stewart of

The evening of Monday, September 8 was an exciting one for Danyel Smith’s Newhouse in NYC Race, Gender & the Media class.

Hosted by Dodai Stewart, deputy editor of, the class was given a fantastic tour of Gawker Media’s “steampunk” SoHo offices—a gorgeously designed, very NYC space that culminates with a roof deck from which you can see the rooftops of lower Manhattan, as well as the Empire State Building. Gawker Media “produces eight original brands [including Gizmodo and Lifehacker] with a collective audience of tens of millions of US readers.”

Stewart, a NYC-native who has been with Gawker and Jezebel for seven years, introduced the class to some of the journalists at the popular sport site, Deadspin, as well as to Syracuse alumna Jessica Smith, who does growth hacking for Gawker’s business side.

Dodai Stewart talked about her beginnings at New York University, and a teen magazine, and then at Time Inc.’s This Old House and Entertainment Weekly. Dodai was generous with some insights about being an African-American woman in journalism, but was far more into making sure students knew how to organize Feedly, manage multiple Twitter feeds and project management platforms, and for them to be ready for the job market. Dodai Stewart said she was honored that she and Jezebel were visited by Newhouse in NYC.
