Newhouse in NYC Meets: Mark Luckie of Twitter

On Tuesday, September 9, Newhouse in NYC became expert Tweeters at Twitter headquarters. Mark Luckie, Manager of Journalism and News at the social media platform, spoke with the students for two hours and allowed them to pick his brain about anything and everything Twitter related. By the end of the night, students learned more about Twitter’s new “Buy Button” functionality, had a hands-on lesson about Twitter analytics in TweetDeck,  and even got a sneak peek at a tool called Dataminr. He also shared some of his best Twitter “habits,” like checking tame.it every morning to see what’s trending on Twitter and using “filters” in the Twitter search bar to only see verified accounts, or posts from certain cities.

Mark graciously let the students raid the Twitter pantry (our new favorite snack: Rip van Wafels), and then he gave a phenomenal presentation about how to best optimize a brand’s Twitter presence by increasing followers and overall engagement. Advertising Senior Lydia Chen live-tweeted his chat from the @NewhouseNYC Twitter handle and recapped some of his best advice:

Mark arranged for a special visit from Newhouse alumna (PR ’11)  Mindy Diamond, Executive Administrative Assistant at Twitter, who talked about her career path and how she landed her job at Twitter.

Mark ended the night with his personal advice on nailing a great Twitterview–exactly what the students needed to hear as they start their #MentorMonday Twitterviews. Reminder: the first #MentorMonday is on Monday, September 29 with PEOPLE’s Andrea Lavinthal, so mark your calendars!

Thank you again, Mark, for such an incredibly informative and fun night.
