Remembering Newhouse Alumna Julie Mendez

We are devastated to share that Newhouse PR alumna (’05) Julie Mendez passed away suddenly on Monday, May 2. Julie was a huge supporter of Newhouse NYC, and we were honored to have her be such an active alumna in the program.

When Julie first learned about the Newhouse NYC, she said she wanted to be involved in any way she could. Julie jumped at every opportunity to meet the students and share career advice. She guest-lectured in the Newhouse NYC social media class and talked with the students about her unique career path, specializing in the multicultural division, first at Edelman and then at Tractenberg & Co. She always brought beauty products from her office at the end of her talk because she wanted to give the students a little treat.

Julie was so good at connecting with the students, and she showed them how hard work and positivity will make you go far in the industry. Julie would often email career-related articles, scholarship opportunities and free networking events to share with the students to help them make the most out of their time in the city. She even did a #MentorMonday Twitterview with us to share career advice. This was one of our favorite tweets:

Julie was extremely close with her Syracuse friends, many she met her freshman year on Day 8. We want to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, fiancé, friends, and all who knew her during this painful time.

Friends have set up a GoFundMe account here to help with her family with the funeral costs and medical expenses.
