Inspiring Speaker of the Week: TBWA’s Doug Melville
By: Kaileigh Woodruff, ADV and Sociology major
We get to go on so many incredible “field trips” with Newhouse NYC, and last week in our Race, Gender, and the Media class, we were honored to hear from Syracuse alumnus Doug Melville. Melville is the Chief Diversity Officer of TBWA\Chiat\Day North America (the agency behind advertising campaigns for Apple, Nike, Gatorade, Nissan and so many more)!
Melville has an interesting and unique story of how he transitioned from Syracuse University to the real world. Early ventures include driving the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, tour managing for Britney Spears, and starting his own business called Red Carpet Runway. Throughout the Melville talk, the room could feel his passion and determination. Melville shared his personal tips and lessons he learned throughout his career which he brings to his job at the Chief Diversity Officer of one of the biggest advertising agencies in the world.
Also at TBWA\Chiat\Day, the students got to meet up with past Newhouse alumni Kyle Kimball, Jared Rosan, and Marie Strycharz after getting a tour of the office space and seeing the Nissan social media wall. We can’t thank Doug and the other Syracuse University alumni enough for their time and for showing off their office space. Go Orange!
